Welcome to the Odd Lands Wiki

If you're reading this, chances are I told you to check this out. Thanks for having a look and welcome to the Odd Lands project.

To put it simply: The purpose of this project is to explore the question of what happens with a fantasy world that doesn't get stuck in the middle ages. The way I'm trying to do this is by creating the world as a setting for pen and paper role-playing games. I'm writing and posting articles about different aspects of the world; its inhabitants and culture, its magic and its monsters.

The setting is not created for any specific set of rules but there will be tests of it using the Strands of Fate system.

Where to start

The entire project is very much a work in progress. I also moved it from a blog to a wiki not long ago. As it turns out the change of format didn't treat the texts from the blog all that well. They're copied here to the wiki and you can find links to the pages here and there. If you're interested you can find the entire blog here. I'm in the process of adapting the blog posts to the wiki format but I keep getting side-tracked by new ideas demanding attention.

The pages that have seen the most attention recently are the following ones:

For a sample of what the project is like, I'd suggest checking the above pages out first. Then either have a look at the original blog or browse the wiki at your leisure. I would like to say that new content is added daily but it's not really true. I do update the wiki a couple of times a week though so it's fairly often. The Activity Feed linked at the top of the page shows the pages most recently changed. Enjoy.

The world

This is where the setting is described in more detail. New articles should be added regularly. Not daily but usually there's at least one per week, often more.

  • Magic - All things related to weaving or channeling the Aether.
  • Sentient spieces - The inhabitants of the world.
  • Gods - Who they are and what they do.
  • Science and Technology - How is this affected by the existence of magic?
  • Culture - What life is like.
  • Politics - Major and local political, humanitarian and environmental organizations etc.
  • Monsters and animals - From the mundane to the strange.
  • History - The main timeline of the world as well as records of significant events from the past.
  • Geography - The planet itself as well as land and regions on it.

Fiction set in the Odd Lands

Early on in the project a request was made for some piece of fiction that would help the reader get a feel for the world. So far a few pieces have been written and they can be found on the Fiction page.
